A frequently asked question: Hey, isn’t there naloxone in Suboxone? What’s up with that? • Buprenorphine (brand name Suboxone) diminishes cravings for opiates such as heroin, while naloxone counters “potential abuse” (meaning: injecting) of Suboxone. • If the Suboxone is taken under the tongue, naloxone won’t get absorbed into the body. • If Suboxone is injected, the naloxone will BEAT the buprenorphine to the opiate receptors, causing withdrawal and dope sickness. OK, so there is naloxone in Suboxone…will Suboxone work for an OD? • No, not advised to use it that way. • The naloxone does not get absorbed under the tongue (the way that Suboxone is supposed to be taken) • If the Suboxone is injected so that the naloxone can get into the body, there will not likely be enough naloxone in it to reverse the OD.
