A friend and I were talking about families and politics. I had a great time catching up with family today at my young cousins birthday party. Ive been living in New York and Mexico for the past decade. I missed a lot of birthdays. I was telling my friend there is no tension about politics in my family, and I mean my small extended family. Considering my family lives in Tennessee, its fairly rare to have a totally left wing family on both sides - moms and dads family. It also occurred to me I dont know a large number of relatives. I wonder if this distance is political? My version of contemporary southern life in the US today was sitting around a giant pink inflatable castle and eating blue cake, joking about how Im on a watch list when I enter the US, having to go off to the special room, unpack everything, and speculating if its because of being associated with Occupy Wall Street. Its nice not to have any political tension in my family. We did have one right winger who hung out with us, I remember. My moms uncle whom I loved despite his politics. He went all the way right: 3 wars and the CIA during Vietnam.
