A friend has asked a question related to my comments on “Could some of the cosmic signs in biblical prophecy be literal?” It requires some explanation so I’m replying here. The question was: “Whats your opinion of the coming Tetrad of Blood moons? Do you think it suggests a major shift in the prophetic fulfillment of the last days as some are suggesting?” The Tetrad of Blood Moons is four lunar eclipses, which make the moon look red, and which will take place in 2014-15. This is unusual in that they all take place on Jewish feast days (Passover and Tabernacles). Some say this is the only time it will happen during this millennium (2000-3000) and that it has happened only seven times in the last 2013 years. However others say there were other examples “connected to” 1948 when the state of Israel was re-established and 1967, the year of the Six-Day War - very significant events in Jewish history. (There will be other tetrads which don’t coincide with Jewish feasts in this millennium). It is also said to be unusual for two solar eclipses to happen within the tetrad period on the two days of the Jewish New Year. The rabbis see eclipses as significant. In the Talmud (book of Jewish tradition), Succah 29a, it is written that a lunar eclipse is a bad omen for Israel and if it is a red moon it means “the sword is coming to the world.” However, if she is obedient to God Israel need not fear these omens. As I have said previously, some of the cosmic signs in NT prophecy may be literal and since Jesus teaches we should see events like earthquakes as (long-distance) pointers towards/reminders of the End, these lunar eclipses could be treated in the same way. However, I do not see them as more significant than this. Nor do I see any relevance in the linkage with Jewish festivals. We also need to avoid any appearance of endorsing astrology.
