A friend of mine in Vellore district is closing down the school as it has become totally unviable to run the school at the current rate of salaries for a good teacher - which is a scarce commodity today - with the current restriction in fees and parents activism and media glare/scare at the drop of the hat. Most of us are talking without specific numbers. We really need to do a detailed study on the viability and economics of running a good school with good teachers in a good location as nothing comes free. Everything comes with a cost and the private people are here not for charity. Do we question the Government to open more number of quality schools in convenient locations with good teachers? Do we have the guts? how many new schools are opened in the last 25 years ? any data available ? One idea could be to compel the schools to publish their annual accounts openly so that their profitability is known to some extant. In power sector the profitability of the private companies are fixed on a percentage basis on the cost. let us not forget for a moment that we are also party to this by enrolling our children in private schools and not in government schools. Today, as my friend is planning to do, it makes more commercial sense for a private school to close it and covert it into a real estate property and promote apartments unless otherwise they are keen to serve the society!
