A friend of mine just brought up some excellent points. I love holidays. I get excited for them. I love being in a perpetual state of excitement and anticipation for the next celebration and all the traditions that come with it. Those of you who say things like its August, why are there already Thanksgiving decorations out!? or its sad that you buy into the greeting card companys scheme or this is just another excuse to capitalize off of silly materialistic people are wasting your breath on me because I will 10000003% disagree with you. My excitement and anticipation for these things dont adhere to some sort of arbitrarily composed schedule that dictates I can only be excited for certain events within a certain time frame. Greeting card companies probably make most of their money off of thing such as birthdays (which can occur any time during the year!) so I dont even know why they get blamed for everything. And yeah, if I want to join the rest of society and buy into materialistic gift-giving rituals at a specific time of year, I freaking will. If I want to take all my money and set it on fire, I freaking will. You dont get to tell me what I do with my money, but Id rather use it to bring some joy and cheer to my loved ones. So in short, saying these things and sneering at decoration displays in shops doesnt make you a more well-rounded or dignified individual; it just makes people like me seriously wonder why you think you need to deny yourself positive feelings until a specific date on the calendar, or because youd rather believe theres a global conspiracy to take advantage of you. That calendars not the boss of you, and if there is a conspiracy, you still come out on top because you brightened someones day with your actions. Life is hard enough as it is. If youre content to wallow in your rules and doubts about holidays, by all means, go ahead. But that doesnt mean you should try and ruin it for those of us who delight in any reason to be happy.
