A friend of mine just posted that in 1978, she worked an entry level union job pulling green chain for $7.05/hour. Google it - I did. Its hard work. Today, the average pay for doing that job full time is $19k, or $9.50/hour. Accounting for inflation, thats about $2.60/hour in 1978 dollars. Or, too put it another way, the average full time pay for this job is about 1/3 what the starting union wage was before Reagan got into office. Its also below the poverty line for a family of three. Next time Paul Ryan or Rand Paul or one of those other Tea Party libertarians mouths off about lazy mooching unmotivated takers on the public dole, think about what life would be like doing that job full time. Or the next time someone whines about raising minimum wage, or complains about unions sucking the life out of businesses.
