A friend of mine living southeast of Cardston has a pair of resident Great Horned owls living on her property. When I visited her today they were roosting in one of her outbuildings. The male owl flew out when her dogs came over to see what I was doing as I approached the building but the female remained in place peeking at me through the rafters and was still there when I left. She says the owls sometimes swoop at the dogs but there have been no actual contact. More interesting is the fact that she has a bunch of free-range chickens roaming her property but so far the owls have not taken any. They seem to prefer the abundant rodents and other small mammals in the area even though they could easily kill a chicken. It probably helps that the chickens go inside their coop at night.
