A friend of mine shared a conversation he had with his son, and I wanted to pass this along as a sign of real hope for our great state: Last night my son Austin asked me what was the difference between a Republican and a Democrat I explained how the differences are limited to a beliefs system and that Republicans generally stood for lower taxes, smaller government, defense of constitutional rights, etc, while Democrats generally focus their efforts on increased government services for specific groups of people, like those with lower incomes. I thought I was pretty fair in my explanation. I then asked Austin where he feels he falls on that spectrum. My 11-year-old Austins response: “I guess more on the Republican end…(pause)…because lower taxes help the poor too.” A few minutes later, after we paid for his new compound bow for his birthday and I handed him the receipt, he studied the receipt and asked, “Dad, what are taxes for?” I explained that taxes fund government services, which initiated a long conversation where Austin explained how smaller government was a good thing because we wouldn’t need as much tax revenue. THIS, is how Republicans will be successful in the future!
