A friend of mine wanted to meet Fitz today, so we headed to the hospital. When I saw him, his color was off - very pale. T said he had had a rough morning and his oxygen saturation had been 40% with 100% oxygen support which means there is no where else to go to support his lung function, which is why he was bluish. The doctor said his lungs are so premature they are running out of options. He had an EKG to see if the vessel that can be treated with ibuprofen is in fact part of the problem. The cardiologist said it was there but typically an enlarged heart is indicative of the problem, but his heart was normal. They stated him on medication to raise his blood pressure to force the blood the right way and they also began steroids to try and kick start the lungs. Steroids and ibuprofen can cause neural damage and abdominal perforations. At this point the benefits outweigh the risks. Id his oxygen saturation does not go up, lactic acid will build up and begin during down his organs. The doc basically said we need to decide how much intervention they should provide in the worst case scenario. In the event his heart stops, how long do we want them to continue life saving measures even though the longer they have to do it the more irreparable damage will be done. Another reason Im writing all this down is to remind myself to heed my own advice. I can go back and read what gave me comfort. We do not wish for prayers for miracles. Coming this far is a miracle in and of itself. We want prayers for Gods will to be done and that our family will find peace no matter the outcome. I held my sons head and feet and soaked in every inch of his body. Every detail, every wrinkle and vein. I cried and my friend held me and said nothing, which is the appropriate response right then. T hugged me and told me its minute by minute and that she loved our family and was praying with us. She said she had seen babies bounce back from the darkest of prognosis. You just dont know. I was told recently that we dont know why we are being tested or if this test is really even for us. Tragedy has struck our family before in much more horrific, senseless ways and was a blessing in the end. However this plays out, we are dependent on the love and support of others and the mercy of our Heavenly Father. Please keep a prayer in your hearts for Fitz and our family. We need all we can get for strength over the next few days.
