A friend of mine who is also a member of my autism parent support group wrote this status and I asked her if I could share it because it really hit home. Hope it touches you as it touched me From Christina R. - ITS AUTISM...If she falls to the floor, kicking & screaming because she wants to order her food. It just her way of coping. Just be patient you will get your turn to order. If she starts throwing things or running herself into me, dont stare, its her frustration. I will handle it, I deal with it everyday. If I am peeling her nuggets it not because Im treating her like a baby, its just her preference. If she ignores your child on the play ground its not because she is a brat. Shes just still working on her social interaction. She would love to play with your child but doesnt know how to yet. She may be to big to sit in the shopping cart, no she isnt lazy, but she would prefer to run around when I need to shop. And I dont have the time to chase her. If I am carrying her out while she is kicking & screaming, its probably because of a meltdown. Just be helpful, open the door, move to the side. Dont stare or whisper. She isnt melting down because she didnt get what she wanted. If it only was that simple. Dont talk to her like she is a baby, because she isnt. Dont yell at her, she is not death. No Im not a bad parent. I just learned that discipline wont help. This is Autism, & its our life. We are working to learn how to deal with all of the above and it isnt easy. But please dont judge her because she isnt judging you.
