A friend of mine wrote this about the IBV scare. It is really good and I would like to share it. I have gotten confirmation from a reliable source that the bird(s) who have tested positive for IBD in washington state is at a single commercial facility. It has not been released due to confidentiality as to which facility it is just that it is located in Thurston County. There are rumors going around involving birds from craigslist and show birds being the cause..... THE BIRD(S) INFECTED HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THOSE THINGS! THESE ARE COMMERCIAL BIRDS LIKELY SHIPPED IN FROM AN OUTSIDE STATE FOR EGG OR MEAT PRODUCTION AT A COMMERCIAL FACILITY. ALL BIRDS ON THE PROPERTY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN QUARANTINE. THERE IS NO FURTHER RISK OF INFECTION FROM THE FLOCK BEING DELT WITH IN WASHINGTON AS THIS IS NOT AN AIR BORN ILLNESS. AGAIN THIS IS NOT AN AIR BORN ILLNESS, IT IS ONLY TRANSMITTED FROM DIRECT CONTACT WITH AN INFECTED BIRD OR THEIR FECAL MATTER. Yes it is true that the PNPA canceled their show next month however it was for other reasons including a scheduling conflict, etc and they are feeling pressure from all of the people who are in a panic about this single case of an illness that has been around for many years. It was first found on the west coast in california in 2008! And yet Stockton, CA show has remained to be one of the biggest shows the west coast for many years..... Fear can drive people in remarkable ways. We simply ask that you all take a deep breath and read all of the factual information slowly and carefully. And check your sources for information before trusting what you read. The WFF show in Monroe, washington next weekend is still going as planned and I hope people do attend who planned to. THERE IS NO MORE RISK FROM THIS DISEASE THAN FROM ANY OTHER ILLNESS! WE WILL NOT BE CANCELLING THE SPRING SWAP OR ANY OTHERS! THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS GIVEN IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO ATTEND. IF WE FELT THERE WAS A SERIOUS RISK TO PEOPLE OR THEIR ANIMALS WE WOULD BE CANCELING THESE EVENT AS YOU OUR VENDORS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO US. HOWEVER AFTER EXAMINING ALL OF THE EVIDENCE WE FEEL THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE ANY FEAR AT THIS POINT. PLEASE BE ASSURED WE ARE MAKING EVERY ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND CLEAN SWAP FREE OF DISEASE. WE ARE EMPHASIZING THAT PRACTICING GOOD BIOSECURITY IS THE BEST PROTECTION YOU CAN HAVE. 1. DO NOT let people handle your chicks or birds. If they are interested in taking it out then you should handle the bird until you are sure they want it. 2. We will have bottles of hand sanitizer at registration but we also recommend you keep one at your booth and ask people to use it before handling your birds. 3. As vendors if you buy birds do your best to keep those birds separate from your birds you will have there for sale and wash your hands in between handling them. 4. Quarantine, Quarantine, Quarantine It can prevent the spread of any disease!
