A friend recently posted a design of a highly functional, and quite lovely, small 400 sq ft log-style cabin, which inspired me to re-design a 2-floor cabin that I came up with some months ago. Ive taken some snapshots of the 3-D rendition of my upgraded plans using Home Designer Architectural 2014 software on my laptop. These plans incorporate a utility room...and a larger layout than the 400 sq ft version that Karen Engelstad so graciously shared. But it stays true to the small design movement...and a minimalist needs without sacrificing too much space. Total square feet (including the utility room only accessible from back porch door) is just under 670. In all honesty, when you build a home with a fairly small and simple design, Im predicting the cost to build this house would increase maybe by 10%...and yet yield about 58% increase in square footage. This simple design can be adjusted to incorporate a loft over the bedroom/bathroom area (with a simple addition of stairs accessible above the back porch area) with the loft being open to the living room below...as well as can be built over a rectangular basement area...also accessed via an outdoor staircase beneath the back porch. I actually plan on constructing this layout within the next 5 years. Ill contract out the foundation, water well, and septic work...and probably the main floor, walls, and roofing. But I hope to do all the exterior D-Log siding and interior all myself. (maybe have Michael Brandal help me a bit too...for free beer.) Now...I just need to find a few acres thatll pass the perc test...and wont break my bank.
