A friend running the NYC marathon on Sunday for the first time asked for tips. Heres what i sent... A) Dont let the crowds inspire you to go too fast in the first half. B) Its a curvy course. Run the tangents C) dont mix gels and Gatorade; one or the other. Dont in fact eat anything you havent eaten on a long run. D) Vaseline on nipples, underarms, and where your shorts hit your legs E) if your toenails tend to rip, um, get a pedicure F) Go to the Salvation Army near Javits when you get your race bib and buy sweatpants and a sweatshirt that you can discard right before the start. G) Bring a gatorade bottle to pee into one minute before the gun goes off. H) if you run even effort, your first mile, up the bridge, will be 30 seconds slower than goal pace and second mile, down the bridge, will be 20 seconds faster I) take the ferry, not a bus. bring a magazine and dont rush either on or off. you wont miss the start. J) the headwind on Sunday is apparently going to suck. So tuck behind other runners. And if it really is 20mph, as the forecast now says, knock your goal back about five minutes. K) The course is designed to kill you during miles 20-23. The crowds disappear right as your energy does. Make sure youre staying with someone else. L) Its an awesome city and an awesome course. When the race is done, shower, drink some water, and then grab a beer. *
