A friend wrote this excellent rebuttal to an op-ed piece in the Times Colonist (Victoria, BC) claiming the radiation from Fukushima wasnt a public health threat: Editor: Please publish accurate info about the on-going Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis. A half million people have signed petitions urging Ban Ki-moon to launch what is needed: an international, independent team of the worlds most qualified and most trustworthy experts to determine the best course of action, putting public safety before profit, and to work with Japan in implementing it, with transparency, on-going monitoring and truthful, regular reporting. J.T. Cullens op ed piece (21 Nov) was a threat to B.C. because what we dont know can hurt us. Three nuclear reactors melted down at Fukushima. Their radioactive cores are lost yet, like many thousands of fuel rods, must be kept cool. 400 tons of radioactive groundwater have been pouring into the Pacific every day ever since 11 March 2011. Polonium, uranium, tritium, cesium, strontium, radioactive iodine and plutonium are only some of the isotopes that have contaminated the jet stream as well. More highly contaminated water is leaking from 1,000 shabbily constructed tanks in the planets most highly active seismic zone. Removing fuel rods has begun, an unprecedented task due to extensive damage, necessary, but treacherous. Background radiation is external. If radioisotopes are inhaled or ingested, they can become lodged internally and continue irradiating us from within. Every bluefin tuna tested off the coast of California had Fuku cesium-137 which, with a 30 year half-life, remains dangerous for 3 centuries. In Canada, it was found in 100% of monkfish, carp, seaweed and shark; 94% of cod and anchovies; 93% of tuna and eels; 92% of sardines; 91% of halibut; 73% of mackerel. Even low levels of radiation are harmful. There is no safe dose. Increasing numbers of people are immigrating to the southern hemisphere in anticipation of greater Fuku calamity. The United Religions Initiative put out a global call for Fukushima Fridays as weekly Days of Prayer. Unprecedented numbers of protestors have been taking to the streets of Tokyo, and people worldwide are protesting Japanese secrecy in front of Japanese consulates on the 11th of every month. Sincerely, Phoebe Sorgen of Fukushima Response
