A friend wrote this on Facebook today, I think it hits the right note: Every time a poor high profile soul loses the fight with themselves to stay alive, the issue of how mental health is treated comes back into public discussion. And yet nothing ever changes. There are still people who view mental health problems as weakness, who think that its possible to one day wake up and decide not to be depressed anymore. There are even GPs (and Ive met a few) that view mental health patients as just another number to get off medication to make their statistics look good. It doesnt work like that; not everyone has a logical reason to feel like they cant get out of bed in the morning, not everyone who suffers from depression or other mental health issues has some deep, repressed memory that makes them act or feel the way they do. Please, if you know someone who suffers from a mental health problem, no matter how small, just be there for them. Dont try to analyse how theyre feeling, because its likely they dont know themselves. Give them a hug, make them a brew and have a chat. About anything or nothing. It could be the difference between them giving up that evening, or living to fight another day. RIP Robin Williams, and everyone else who throws in the towel, so sorry you felt like you couldnt throw the punches anymore.
