A funny thing that happens when youve been listening to music - TopicsExpress

A funny thing that happens when youve been listening to music outside the mainstream for a large part of your life is that you develop a warped sense of what songs are “too popular” or “played out.” Case in point: in a comment on one of my previous posts about tonight’s upcoming 1977-82 throwback show my good friend Tim Sommer – who I met at NYU 35 years ago – mentioned the song “Is Vic There,” by Department S. It wasnt a request per se, but still my knee-jerk reaction was “too obvious!” I’d already packed a couple of other Department S records last night, thinking I should leave “Is Vic There” at home this time around. On further reflection that seems absurd. Why should I treat that song as if it’s “Hey Jude” or “Stairway To Heaven?” But I do strive to balance the “hits” of the era with cool records that might not be as well-known when I’m doing shows like the one I’ll do tonight. So will I play “Is Vic There” or not on The Evan Funk Davies Show on WFMU tonight? I honestly can’t answer that right now. But I am going to throw it into the singles box before I head to the station, just in case.
