A further letter has now been received from the Council regarding concerns over the alterations to Woodlands Avenue. The letter reads as follows: I have consulted further with the Council’s Roads Department and can now provide further information. The road narrowing features, located outside the front of the school, are to allow the school crossing patroller a traffic free section of road to cross and to minimise the distance between kerbs. Your concern regarding vehicles speeding through the road narrowing feature has been noted and the Transportation Section within Roads will be carrying out traffic speed counts during the new school term. This exercise will determine actual vehicle speeds and will assist the Council in determining whether any remedial measures, such as driver speed signage, are required. The issue of double parking and parking on the pavement should be directed to the Police, who will take appropriate action against offenders. Parking practices can then be observed and recommendations made regarding any additional lining required. In relation to the pedestrian barriers at the nib points, the Council’s Road Safety Officer will be asked to visit the school during term time and review the movement of pupils at the nibs. He will be asked to report back on his findings and develop proposals that address any identified issues. The Council is not in a position to instruct parents to cross at the manned crossing point and would suggest that further road safety education of both pupils and parents may reduce this occurrence. The Council’s Road Safety Training Officer can assist with this if required. Any comments welcome.
