A good coach cannot develop his team without - TopicsExpress

A good coach cannot develop his team without practice! Mathematics is not any different. In my math class, I am a coach, a guide, and a facilitator. I want my students to become FLUID in their math. Students can only develop fluidity with independent practice at home followed by deep-level discussion of their mistakes the next day. I get furious when people complain about math homework to me. We are willing to keep kids at the ballpark for 3 or more hours in the afternoon and shuttle them around to 3 or 4 additional activities after that. We are willing to play $50 or more per hour for hitting lessons, dance lessons, etc., but we wont make time for academic tutoring, even if its FREE. With that being said, let me say this about MY class. My students will be expected to practice math at home. I spend an enormous amount of time with my students in class, but they MUST practice what I have taught them at home. People suggest that they only need to show mastery on a few problems. I whole-heartedly disagree. I expect them to become FLUID at math. Math is NOT a spectator sport - YOU MUST PRACTICE! You must chew on it and digest it for yourself. Can you learn to play a piano by watching someone else play it? Can you play a musical masterpiece with just one try? Please know this: I will not merely cover the objective and be satisfied that it is mastered with 3 little problems. I will assign additional practices with increasing rigor to insure that my students FULLY understand & retain the concepts for longevity. I also want to see that they can extend the idea and apply it to real life. If my classroom philosophy goes against the new-age ideas in education, then so be it. I AM OLD SCHOOL! I will do what I know is right for my classroom. Sorry if this cuts into the extracurricular lifestyles of todays youth. Education still comes first. In conclusion - if you are unable to get your kid to do what is required, then dont blame (or try to change) the teacher.
