A good comment on the shameful xenophobic events of last week. What is missing, however, is any acknowledgement of the role that the African National Congress government has played in contributing to the current situation of inequality and growing poverty. The role of government is to provide an enabling environment for business. It is NOT the role of business to address every social ill in a country. It is also incorrect to state that the economy continues to be controlled by 10% of the population and all recent research rejects this view. Black businessmen and philanthropists are noticeable by their absence in addressing social ills or improving lives in poor communities. This is because they are coopted by the ANC government to promote the looting of the public coffers that government has made the norm in this country. The views expressed in this article are understandable but would be more useful if underpinned by solid research and less personal assumption.
