A good friend of mine just asked me if I touch up or enhance my photos to make my cats look better. Good question... I got to thinking... if she thought I might do this, others maybe wonder as well. By enhance if you mean, increase clarity of image, then YES - I do! In fact, if my photos are dark I will brighten them. If the the imagine is fuzzy, I will sharpen it. This does not change the appearance of my cats but simply enhances the photo! By enhance if you mean, add white edges or black edges to outline my photos, then YES... I do this as well. I think it makes them look pretty! I CROP my photos, so they are more centered! I do not ADD props afterwards - the props in my photos are REAL and are there when I take the photo. I wont lie, A COUPLE TIMES (and by a couple, I mean A COUPLE!) Ive had a kitten or cat with a little stain under the eye, that Ive LIGHTENED up. BUT... I do NOT touch up or falsify anything in my photos or in other words, change things about my cats to make them look more appealing (ear size/placement, nare size, coat length, eye size, color etc). Even if I wanted to (which I dont) I would not even know how to do it! I use an online photo editor (picmonkey) and have the FREE membership which only allows me to use certain (basic) options on their site. When I edit or ENHANCE my photos (and I do it often), it literally takes me about 1-2 minutes per photo! I will at times use the options such as tranquil, dusk, orton, focal black and white, etc. But again - this doesnt change the actual cat - simply the color of the photo. Yes, it may make the eyes darker or lighter or the coat color darker or lighter but using these options is like using BLACK AND WHITE or SEPIA. I dont use them to make my cats look better - I just like the effect it has. Simple as that. I just wanted to share this with others in case anyone else wonders if I touch up my photos. Photography is my other hobby - I love it. If one of my photos really sucks, I wont share it with anyone. And I certainly will not go to all of the work of setting up props and backdrops and spending time taking photos if I am just going to touch them up later anyways. AND my kittens and cats are beautiful in my eyes and I am not going to change their appearance to make others like them more! It really makes no difference to me if you think my cats have big ears or small eyes or short coats or whatever other qualities are frowned upon. I love them and think they are beautiful and that is all that really matters. I like to think that my photos show more than just the physical aspect of my kittens.. My photos are intended to capture the playfulness in their pose, the happiness in their eyes. They show my kittens are not afraid and cowering but socialized and loved. And I believe they show that my kittens are healthy, bright eyed and bushy tailed!
