A good friend of mine recently asked me why I stopped going to church, and he sent me a great article to see if I could relate. Ive decided to share my response here because many of my FB friends who are church friends often ask me the same question. Well, heres my perspective: I agree with most of the article you sent me, but my journey is more of one that requires action to keep from being bored and feeling unproductive. I have learned more about the history of religions and church to understand that the way we do church was never a way that helped the less fortunate rise from their bondage. The atmosphere we maintain in church produces sheep, and I choose not to be one. I do believe that we must maintain our connection to others (Gods children) through gatherings, but I dont prefer the church service format. Im not opposed to visiting churches from time to time, but I treat it like a family reunion. Its not a weekly occurrence, unless it provides some other benefits specifically to my life. I have thought long and hard about where I would be spiritually enriched and, at the same time, able to give the most value for my time and talents. A spiritual organization that would interest me enough to join with a weekly commitment would be one that did the following: - Actively pursues creative ways to engage youth with opportunities to express themselves and/or develop their gifts/talents. - Teach Black people about their history and bring them together to demonstrate how unity can benefit the masses. - Develops strong partnerships with other organizations that can benefit its members. These 3 requirements for me seem simple, but very few ministries really do them. If they did, I would already be a member. If Im missing something, let me know. Much Love and Respect, Mark
