A good history lesson from Dan Thrift: There has been an effort - TopicsExpress

A good history lesson from Dan Thrift: There has been an effort on the part of certain recent media contributors to rehabilitate the sordid Machiavellian operations of our government during the Vietnam War. Though some disagree with Christopher Hitchins philosophical perspectives expressed during his long public career, few consider him anything but a careful researcher, and certainly he was not a liar. Note also that other reputable writers e.g. distinguished reporter (Pulitzer Prize for covering the Mai Lai massacre and others) Seymour Hersh, and long time New York Times political columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Willaim Safire are also consulted. Half of the people whose names are carved on our Vietnam Memorial wall died AFTER Richard Nixon (using information gained by a side career enhancing deal with Henry Kissinger) issued a separate but illegal (Nixon was not actually in office, and therefore was a private citizen trying to make independent foreign policy affect his election chances) bargain with the South Vietnamese government. The original agreement was later ratified by the Nixon Administration, but only after several more years of war, and many deaths. Two million Vietnamese died in that war. Other horrific damage (the Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge etc.) are also downstream from these actions. I remember The Vietnam Veterans Against the War group being very clear on the broad implications of these shenanigans in the early 70s (the Cambodia, and Hanoi bombing of civilians being only two examples), but only with the release (this video is from 2002!) of government held documents has the internal decision making process, and especially the level of illegal secretive activity become public.
