A good story for a Friday. As a boy/teen, our family had the terrorizing experience of seeing my brothers house burn down one night..and we didnt know as we rushed to the scene that he and his family had stayed the night at his in-laws...their vehicles were in their driveway when we got there. Our neighbor farmers house also burned down one winter and I remember that sub-zero degree night as we slept on the first floor of our house to keep warm...where the orange glow of the neighbors burning house a half a mile away lit up the interior of our house. I recall my Dad running out of the house, slamming the door, and slogging down the snow bound dirt road to get to their house to save them. They had gotten out in time. We also had our farm barn burn down with our seasons hay in it...and our chickens. Later our rented barn at another farm burned down with our gracious hosts horses and our purchased hay. Imagine our indescribable joy and our gratitude (that infuses our world to this day) when up the road came our Mennonite neighbors...men, women, boys, and girls, with saws, trucks, tractors, hammers, nails, food, drink...who completed a brand new barn for us in less than two weeks....from the cement blocks on up to the peak. You dont forget things like that. We were not Amish nor their brethren Mennonite, but we were neighbors. nbcdfw/news/national-international/Amish-Girls-Garage-NY-Richville-Kidnapping-Barn-Raising-272675871.html?_osource=outbrain_recirc=obinsite
