A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the June 21 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, Senator Gbenga Aluko, has cautioned the national leadership of the party against adopting primaries election for the choice of the party’s candidate in the election to avoid splitting into different camps ahead of the poll. Senator Aluko, who made the plea while speaking with news men in Abuja shortly after he submitted his nomination form along with others, said the conduct of primaries in Ekiti State would result into the splitting of the party and at the end the day the party would end having about five different candidates as it happened in Anambra State last year. Senator Aluko pointed out that he was not afraid of heading for primaries but added that the notion of getting a consensus candidate as canvassed by President Goodluck Jonathan was in order to make the party united and strong as it engaged the opposition in the election. Recalling the outcome of meetings between President Jonathan and members of the party from the South West and particularly Ekiti State, Aluko said, “I can guarantee you that if we go ahead to conduct primaries today, we will have five different primaries from the PDP and we will have different results from different aspirants. Meanwhile, a former Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Tunji Odeyemi, has expressed fear about what he described as untidy manner in which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is handling the issue of its governorship candidate for the June 21 election in the state. Odeyemi, who is also a governorship aspirant in the PDP, said he could not imagine that some of his colleagues could disregard the honest and fatherly advice offered by President Goodluck Jonathan as to the adoption of a consensus option in picking a candidate, saying this was not healthy for the party. Odeyemi, who addressed newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday, also decried the alleged attempts by his co-aspirants “to unnecessarily rock the boat of the party and that of Mr President on the matter”, and posited that the “seeming desperation of some aspirants could only portray them as people who have no regard for Mr President who doubles as the national leader of the PDP.” My take - Why are the aspirants; who found relish in paying the mandatory N11Million Nomination Form fees; now afraid of spending N200M on “party delegates” during primary election? I no fit laugh o!
