A great game of cricket last night! A nail biter till the finish! The Cornish are well known for their hospitality and yesterday just confirmed it. Grampound Road, the cricket club where we were playing are having a week of festivities to mark the opening of their new clubhouse, change rooms and pitch. The MCC played Grampound Road 1st XI and we were second on the list, a day night fixture vs the Cornwall U/13 team. Saints won the toss and we elected to bat, our innings didnt really gain any traction as we lost wickets at regular intervals, however Josh Lazenby played an innings of deftness and maturity, blazing 18 runs in the last over, finishing on 48 not out, to give us a total of 142-6. We felt that this total was a little shy of what we wanted, but would be enough to defend. The Cornish set off chasing the total with much enthusiasm and at drinks at 15 overs they were 72-2, up with run rate required and wickets in hand, it was not looking good for Saints. Our opening bowlers had travelled far an wide, and Saints boys were scrabbling in the hedges looking for the ball. An impassioned half time talk by Mokgwetsi Elias Tlhabanyane saw the Saints boys come out with renewed energy and vigour. An excellent running catch on the boundary by Josh Pilling further sparked the boys, and those of us watching from the freezing cold stands knew that the game was on. Our spinners once again managed to capture wickets with the Cornish trying to hit the ball in the air. Our fielding was exceptional, with a run out and some fantastic catches on the boundary by Michael Wasley and James Thornton. Colby Dyer ended with 4 wickets and JM Rey with 3. Some really tight bowling at the death by Josh Pilling put the squeeze on the Cornish and they eventually finished 10 runs shy of our total, what an excellent advertisement for the game of cricket! Our boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing under lights and went home with their hosts happy and excited. Today we have a down day, to have a look at the tourist sights of Cornwall until we play again tomorrow.
