A great turn out of 39 competitors took part in the annual Captains Junior Day at Carmarthen Golf Club. In very difficult windy conditions, the junior section put together a great show of shot making in front of the admiring Captain, Paul McCall. The competition day was split into four sections of varying handicap ability and age. The main section was won by Junior Captain Ryan Skinner, returning after his school exams, putting together an excellent 38 points. This will encourage Ryan whose aim this year is surely to become a single handicap golfer which is comfortably within his capabilities. Ryan pipped the ever improving Sam Reynolds (37 points) who is showing great promise since gaining his Men’s handicap. In 3rd place with 36 points was another player having an excellent start to the season, namely Sam Hitchcock. Sam again has put in a good showing with his 4th top 3 position of the season. Some other creditable scores included last week’s winner, Sion Jenkins with 35 points together with James Bryan. In the Yellow/Red section, the promising 11 year old Sean Hazelby continues to impress, on this occasion putting together an outstanding 41 points to win his section from Dafydd Daniel, who himself put together 38 points. Both Sean and Dafydd have worked hard on their games during the winter under the guidance of Darren Griffiths and their early season play shows that their commitment is paying off. The ever consistent Jason Powell-Hill took 3rd place who also took the nearest the pin on the 9th. Lowri Thomas took the longest drive prize on the 18th. In the Blues section, Megan Thomas continued her consistent play with 20 points for 9 holes and will now try and gain her ladies handicap which is a fantastic effort for the 10 year old. In second place was Lewys James with a very good 18 points followed by new member Josh Edwards who is showing great promise with 17 points, pipping Deian Rees on the back 6 holes. Deian however has been promoted to the Red tee’s due to his early season form. In the Wizards section, for those juniors ranging from 6 years onwards, 12 juniors played on “Y Marchog” Academy course. Winner with a brilliant 23 shots was Elis Price who is following in his big brother Jac’s footsteps. Elis is only 7 years of age but such is his promise and enthusiasm that he has been promoted to the blue tees, a brilliant achievement. In second place with 28 shots was Holly Cleaton whose score would have probably won in any other year. In 3rd place with 30 shots was 7 year old Oliver Rees, keenly supported by his grandfather and ex- Captain Alun Rees who watched on in admiration as he scored 30 to pip Director of Golf, Darren Griffith’s son, Oliver Griffiths. In 4th place was Keely James, grand-daughter of President Lynn who scored 33 and Thomas Lewis a further shot behind. This section showed the strength of the girls coming through the section and hopefully this will encourage others to play the game. The day concluded with the Captain treating the youngsters to a meal and presentation of superb prizes and a speech of thanks from Junior Vice Captain, Lowri Thomas.
