A group called Sorensen came to our church a few weeks back and sang a song called Pretty Good Night that talked about how the angels went to tell the shepherds first that Jesus had been born. They did not go to the rich men, the well liked men, and they went to the least of these, the losers, the guys no one liked to be around... they were the first to get the good news. God invited the losers to play a part in that miraculous evening. It is funny because God gives second chances, he loves those the world loves to hate, and each one is just as precious to him. So as we all sit in warm houses and open presents and eat lots of food over the next few days... remember the reason for the day and that Christ was born in a manger... a feeding troth... not a clean hospital bed. There was no room in the inn when Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem for the census. Everyone and their mother was in town and all the rooms were full, so they ended up in a cave/barn type room filled with animals and all the smells and bells that come with. It was not glamorous. Although I enjoy decorations like the next person, Christmas is not about the best light show, the best wrapping paper or fancy dinners. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus and in this century we would have been in ripped up jeans and covered in dirt and boots all muddy with the smell of manure in the air. This past year my dad has been working on building a business called Second Chance Wash Bay where he will hire and train ex-inmates, the losers, the least of these that the world has thrown away after they made a mistake. Christmas, the true meaning reminds me that I should be humble, thankful for all I have and remember that it is not about me or making me look good, but about sacrificing for others. Giving to Second Chance, or even being a part of it may seem weird to some... a waste of time to some... but in my book it is just like the angels going to tell the shepherds the good news first. You never know what they will do, who they might become with a second chance, with being shown some love and support. “It is a pretty good night to be the least of these…”
