A group known as Concerned Taraba Tiv Youth Frontier (CTTYF) - TopicsExpress

A group known as Concerned Taraba Tiv Youth Frontier (CTTYF) yesterday said that over 140 people were killed and over 178,000 others were displaced following the attacks by suspected herdsmen on Tiv villages in Southern and Central Zones of the state in the past four months. But the Taraba State police spokesman, ASP Joseph Kwaji, disputed the figures, saying the police are not aware of such. He added that crises in the Southern and Central zones affected all ethnic groups and not only the Tivs. He said the police have been able to bring the situation under control and that the areas are now enjoying “relative peace”. A release by Chairman of the group, Goodman Dan Dahida and Secretary, Samson Ben Jolly, had alleged that scores of Tiv settlements in Wukari, Ibi, Donga, Gassol, Bali and Takum have been sacked following the series of attacks. The group said over 30 people were killed in Gassol, 30, 000 displaced and over 50,000 houses touched, adding that 46 others were killed in Bali communities with 148,036 displaced and 6,086 houses touched, among other killings. The group condemned the killings which have been going on in the six local councils of the state and called on government to take more pragmatic steps to end the crises and ensure safe return of their people to their settlements to continue farming activities. According to the group, the state government’s peace initiatives and peace agreement signed in Wukari have not yielded positive results as killings and burning of houses have continued in some of the Tiv villages in the state. It also called on government to constitute a commission of enquiry to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the crisis with a view to bringing it to an end. “Government should set up a joint task force of credible people to ensure the safe return of displaced people back to their settlements and rehabilitate them adequately while those people occupying Tiv settlements should be ordered to vacate such places with immediate effect”, the group said.
