A happy New Year to all and that said, great health too! The question then turns to should I be washing my hands in the sink, with Wet Ones Wipes or Sanitizer constantly in the winter? A maybe far fetched sounding answer is no. As per the UK government site amongst others, the flu, cold, and other types of germs only live a life on your hands for a short time compared to other surfaces. They take the flu virus which could only live for fifteen minutes on your hands but twenty four hours on other hard surfaces, many cold bacteria live for twenty minutes-ish before not causing harm. Washing your hands constantly kills the good bacteria which lives on your hands, and your skin is an organ that has the job of filtering out anything not welcomed in your body. However, washing your hands constantly can also cause your hands to dry out and crack, leaving vulnerabilities in your hands for germs and dirt to get in. While WetOnes may want to sell you hundreds of their products to use for one hundred different things, the fact is that WetOnes Wipes dont kill the flu virus on your hands, and can eventually dry out your hands. Also only certain hand sanitizers kill flu germs. So how often should I be washing my hands to beat getting sick? Never? No no.... Right before I eat and after using the restroom would be two great examples, and the best part is that there is normally a sink around during these two cases. Remember to not touch your face in public to avoid gaps in protection of your skin, welcoming in the germs through your eyes or mouth. As for other times, if its in public and you sneeze on your hand (ELBOW!), I do appreciate if you dont share your germs with me. Links are in the comment below! Happy New Years (late since Ive been working with everyone else who has colds and some customers coming in with the flu...) Go hands go?
