A haunting melody; a deep night as America entered a deep, dark Depression. Supposedly the phrasing Vallee used in singing this song was patterned after the trombone line on the musical chart. From that concept, sometimes singers in later years such as Sinatra, Crosby and Como similarly patterned their crooning vocals after particular musical instrumentation on the music charts. Fascinating stuff...but for now, just listen to what 1929 sounded like:
