A hidden room discovered while fighting a house fire in Owasso contained a pot stash and paraphernalia worth more than $8,000. The Owasso Fire Department responded to a house fire at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at 14019 E. 101 St. N. While extinguishing the fire, the fire personnel discovered a hidden room in the attic containing a large marijuana cultivation system and several marijuana plants, Owasso Police Deputy Chief Jason Woodruff said. The fire department contacted the Owasso Police Department and officers responded to the scene to investigate. The homeowner admitted to the illegal grow operation and gave consent for the officers to search his residence, Woodruff said. Officers recovered a complex hydroponic grow system, grow lights, more than 40 marijuana plants, bags containing packaged/dried marijuana, scales, a loaded handgun and more than $8,000 in cash, Woodruff said. This case will be submitted to the Tulsa County District Attorney, seeking an out-of-custody arrest warrant for Cultivation of Marijuana and other related charges, Woodruff said. The official cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but early indications point to a faulty ballast box on the grow lights as the source of the fire (possible electrical short), Woodruff said.
