A high school student in Tennessee claims her constitutional rights were violated because she was disciplined when she allegedly told a classmate “bless you” after they sneezed. According to CBS Charlotte, when Kendra’s parent’s were told about her suspension, school administrators said it was because she yelled “bless you” across the room and that created a distraction in the class. In addition, an anonymous student sent this picture to reporters showing a whiteboard with all the words that the teacher doesn’t allow in her class: ( click on the link below to see the picture) In addition to “bless you,” the other banned words are “stupid,” “dumb,” “boring,” “stuff,” “I don’t know,” “hang out” – and “my bad.” To add more controversy to the suspension, Turner’s pastor said that other kids have spoken about how the particular teacher who reprimanded Kendra is very “demeaning to them in regard to their faith.” Many of Turner’s classmates did not agree with how she was reprimanded, and wore hand made “bless you” shirts the following day. Here’s the thing: Saying bless you after someone sneezes is a common courtesy. If Turner had said something profane or insulting, her suspension would be much more warranted. Unless there is more to the story than Turner has conveyed, simply telling a classmate bless you after they sneeze is like saying excuse me when you burp… it’s simply good manners.
