A historical survey made about Arya Edigas ( Goud, Illathu Pillaimars, Nadars, Ezhavas, AryaKalals, Kalars and Kalwars ) which are the surnames given to the people who were engaged in manufacture and selling of Wines/Liquor. There are similar communities in different parts of India involved in same profession and background with different Surnames. Among them are Ezhavas or Thiyyas of Kerala, Billavas and Thiyya billavas of South Kannada region, Edigas of Karnataka, Bhandari of Maharashtra & Gujarat, Nadars of Tamilnadu, Gouds of Andhra, Mewaras of Rajasthan, Jayaswals of Bihar and Utter Pradesh, Sahas from Bengal, Ahluwalias of Haryana and Panjab, Durave and Nalaver of Srilanka, Sau, Sav, Sao or Sahu in the Malwa region (east Gujarat and West Madhya Pradesh). A detailed list of various surnames available in India, are given in Annexure attached herewith. These people altogether number an estimated 100 million worldwide and mostly live in Western, Central and Northern India, South India, Nepal, Western Pakistan, Eastern Afghanistan, Germany, UK, and USA. A compact and Subtle history of India is yet to be written by indigenous Indians. The History what we study today is based on the writings sponsored by foreigners, especially during the British period, initiated by Sir William Jones, in 19th century AD, assisted by the Priests of Bengal, for the Asiatic Society of Bengal. There are may references on India, made by foreign travellers like Peripleus-50-80AD: Stearapo - BC 64-24 AD: Magasthanese - 302-296 BC; Faa hieng - 399-414 AD; and Yi-Van Suang - 629-645 AD, etc. One of the earliest historians of the world, Herodotus, has made reference to the Toddy Taping community of India, especially of the South, that they were great Warriors, expert Navigators, & engaged in inter-continental Trades, especially in Purple, a kind of valuable fabrics of Textiles. He refers to them as Masters of letters who parted the art of writing to the Greeks and the Ionians. The manuscript of Herodotus is displayed in one of the Libraries of Canads. This statement of Herodotus is literally proved by the latest archaeological findings declared by the Director of Archaeology, Tamilandu, as reported in The Hindu of recent times. Ediga community has revealed that there are more than 250 branches of Nadars(gouds) living all over India, known in different names, speaking multi-languages. The Idigas are a most powerful branch of Nadars(gouds) ruling the central India, establishing power up to North and South, especially during the period of Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara Empire. They are related to the Dand Sena, Kalal, Kekeyas or the Jayasals, Chouhans and the Sura Senas of ancient times.
