A homeless man was sitting in the back of the bus. He was wearing a brown coat over his gray coat and a red plaid scarf. His fingernails were black with dirt and showing through the holes in the cut off fingertips of his gloves. He had a worn out beany covering his gray hair, and an unshaven tired face. All this man’s possessions fit into one tattered backpack and 3 plastic grocery bags. A little girl and her mom got on the bus. The little girl runs to the back of the bus and sits in the open seat right in front of the homeless man. Her mom is sitting next to her shortly. The little girl looks out the window at someone walking a dog. She looks back at the homeless man and says to him, “Look at the dog. Doesnt it look so soft!”. The homeless man looks out the window towards the dog who has captured the girls eye. The bus begins to move and the little girl opens her kitty purse and takes out some tic tacs. She puts one in her mouth and then offers one to her mom. The little girl then turns around in her seat to the homeless man. “Would you like a tic tac?” She offers. The homeless man holds out his hand in acceptance and she puts one tic tac in his big gloved hand. He smiles at her politely and eats the tic tac. The bus stops and mom says, “This is our stop.” The homeless man reaches into one of his 3 grocery bags and pulls out a can of sprite soda; He holds the can out to the little girl. She takes the soda and says, “Thank you! Have a good day. Bye!” and exits the bus with her mom. The bus drives away slowly and the homeless man looks out to see the little girl and her mom standing there waving goodbye to him. He smiles and waves back to them as the bus pulls away from the curb to continue the journey down the road. The question at church was ‘What Does Jesus Look Like To Me?’ The pastor said “Bob the electrician from LaConner.” I say he looks like the homeless man my daughter Electra befriended with a tic tac. The homeless man on the bus who had so little, and still gave anyways. That homeless man who taught me so many lessons with his silence and generosity. A homeless man, who smiled.
