A hot and quick start by the Faulkner Eagle offensive unit had the Bethel Wildcats Football team back on their heels early Saturday night in Montgomery, Alabama and the Wildcats despite a good second quarter could never recover and fell 58-7 in a Mid-South Conference Western Division battle. Faulkner scored on their first three possessions on three touchdown passes by senior quarterback Josh Hollingsworth and added a 69-yard punt return by Steve Dawson for a score and led after the first quarter 28-0. Another Hollingsworth touchdown pass in the second quarter gave the Eagles a commanding 35-0 lead at the half. The senior signal caller for Faulkner would wind up with four touchdown passes on the night giving him 25 on the year. He also surpassed the 10,000 career yard mark with his final strike in the third quarter on a 47-yard pass to Trump Harrison. Adding insult to injury the Eagles had a 94-yard interception return for a score by Kelepi Nau. The Eagles would record a safety with just over a minute left in the contest to improve their record to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the MSC West. Bethel fell to 2-7 and 0-3. Bethels score came on an 89-yard kick-off return in the third quarter by senior Jahron Reynolds. Bethels Stoney Burns and Jocquel Skinner both had interceptions in the contest. It was the sixth pick of the year by Burns giving him 11 in his career. He is fourth on the all-time list at Bethel. Skinners pick was his second of the season and gives him 14 in his career which places him third on the school career list. Tyler Murray led Bethel with nine total tackles. Faulkner had 559 total offensive yards while Bethel was held to just 82 total yards. The Eagles dominated with 24 first downs while Bethel had five. Both numbers were season lows for the Wildcats. Bethel Coach Chris Elliott said, The slow start just did us in. We let them get behind us and just did not execute on either side of the ball. Our effort was there but we made too many mistakes. We are playing a lot of freshman and a lot of new people and in the end we are struggling. They will learn and improve with every play and game. This is not the first time we have gone through this in our program and we will recover by that learning process and continuing to work hard. The Wildcats travel to Cumberland University Saturday to battle the Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m.
