A how to video with Stevie to teach your dog the place command at home. We will also utilize food in training for the place command in the initial stages. Dogs must first become comfortable with the object that will be used as place. Make sure your dog can physically get their body onto the object before you start naming the command. Use your body position to help the dog move with you to the right spot. Mark the position with good , yes or a praise word. This lets your dog know that is the right thing to do. If using food you would give them a reward for going onto the place here as well with your praise word. Start at first by taking NO steps away from your dog and releasing them immediately with break, free or any other release word. You can also (if desired) give them a little treat when you release them so they understand it is ok to come off of place with that word and they did the right thing. Your dog will start to associate the word place with putting their body (all 4 paws) onto the cot and break with all done you can now come off of the place spot. We utilize a quick, firm leash pop paired with no for breaking the perimeter of place which the dogs understand and respond to immediately. This creates a consequence for not staying within the boundary and the dogs quickly understand that the word no means they have made a wrong choice and must go back to their spot. You want to use as little force necessary to get the point across but not be so soft that your dog ignores you and you end up dragging them back up onto their place. Using positive to mark and / or reward the correct choices during her initial learning phases of the command will let your dog know that is the right thing to do when you say place. Using a quick, but fair, correction with the word no will teach your dog that they have made a wrong choice and must not do that. Then you guide them back to the correct spot and try again. They will begin to understand that they must stay there until released and that if they try to come off that a no means wrong choice get your butt back to your spot.
