A human-centered argument for prioritizing the conservation of natural systems may go something like this: Literally ALL of the resources which our economy and social systems rely on are produced by natural systems. Caring for natural systems increases the rate at which they produce resources and provide services for us, directly benefiting human society and ultimately providing a major return on any well-informed investment of time and money put into such measures of care. Exploiting systems for profit by un-sustainable means causes a long-term reduction of resource output, and, subsequently, a net loss of value and ultimate deficit associated with the investment of time and money invested in such short-sighted endeavors. I would argue that the long-term economic losses of poorly managed resource acquisition far exceed the profits.
