A human life seen with complete knowledge of the story is unlike a book, but much like a tree, with the present mind near the top of the trunk, the past thickening with understanding, the roots of knowledge in cultural history deepening, and a bounty of choices spreading out before us like limbs, fading into the feeble twigs of indeterminacy. When one tree unfairly hogs the Sun, sometimes the gardener will remove limbs from that tree, so that others may grow. But only a blind and incompetent gardener would strip every such tree of all its limbs, only to ensure that they will never grow back. Your government is blind and incompetent.
