A large crocodile was killed and its tail hacked from its body, - TopicsExpress

A large crocodile was killed and its tail hacked from its body, leaving the carcass to decompose by the roadside. The reptile was discovered last week along the Salt River Main Road in Clarendon. It has come to the realization of the environmental authorities that the consumption of crocodile meat (tail) is a growing trend in the parish and other parts of the island. Scientific officer at C-CAM, Brandon Haye says the killing, consumption, and or possession of a part or whole of the crocodile is illegal. However, despite stiff penalties and fines of up to $100,000, persons still hunt and kill the reptile for its tail. He explained that consuming the meat of the reptile is dangerous to human health because it feeds on dead and decaying organisms in the nation’s swamps. In addition, he pointed out that the Jamaican crocodile could soon become extinct if humans continue to feed on them. Loop News Service
