A large group of volunteers from Coast Guard Portland were recognised this year for their hard work and commitment at the awards weekend because of the distance to travel they were unable to attend. 22 volunteers received awards ranging from ten year service awards to meritorious awards. Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Portland Flotilla commander Stephen Brown was proud of what his members have achieved. The Meritorious awards were award for: Efforts of the crew onboard Coast Guard Portland vessel CG17 for their outstanding work during a May Day call in rough seas off Portland on Easter Monday 2014 DESCRIPTION OF SERVICE: A MAYDAY call from a 5.8 meter vessel with six people onboard. We are sinking 15nm south west of Bridgewater Bay ( 30nm from Portland Harbour) CG17 put to sea assisted by HEMS 4 air ambulance ,two fixed wing aircraft together with diverting a close by ship. CG17 crew managed their vessel in deteriorating sea conditions and overcame mechanical failure to ensure a speedy arrival at the assist location. HEMS 4 air lifted one person from the stricken vessel. The very rough conditions made transferring of the remaining five people to CG17 dangerous to all people involved. The continuing deteriorating sea conditions resulted in the stricken vessel breaking the tow line. The Coast Guard skipper showed strong leader ship and demonstrated safety of life is the priority. The stricken vessel was a banded, it washed up on King Island ten days later. CG17 crew excelled in their duties, managing a deteriorating medical condition and their own vessel mechanical problems in force 8 sea conditions, to ensure all onboard arrived back at port safe.
