A lawsuit was ruled upon that could allow National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to close the red snapper fishing season for 2014 and possibly for 2015 in Federal waters. Next week the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will meet to determine the number of days for Florida red snapper season. How does this affect you? - Recreational angling in Florida is a $5 billion industry with over 3 million participants, 39% coming from out-of-state, brining tourism dollars to our coastal communities - The $5 billion industry supports fishing and boating supplies & service, boat manufacturing and sales with jobs for over 94,000 Floridians - Anglers coming from out of state stay in hotels, eat in our restaurants and visit our local attractions - Anglers spent $9.8 billion in 2011. Including multiplier effects, these purchases resulted in more than $9.3 billion in sales, $3.1 billion in income, $4.9 billion in value-added (GDP), and supported 89,319 jobs. (asafishing.org/uploads/Comparing_Recreational_and_Commercial_Marine_Fishing_Data_Report_May_2013.pdf) - All of this might not happen for another two years! We need your help! Please write to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and let them know that any further restrictions (by deleting the fishing season) will have long lasting effects on our local economy. Please write your concerns to [email protected].
