A legend by Don Edgar White Wolf - This is the time of The Return of the Buffalo. I will tell you this story as it was told to me by my Great Grandfather, when I was a little child. He was told this story by his ancestors. This is not a story just about the Cherokee but of all Indians. The date the story was told to me was the early 1950s. Some of the winged and four legged that once lived here and walked these lands for many hundreds of years were all driven away by the coming of the white man. But a time will come, many years from now, when the century turns and the seventh generation of our people will walk these lands. In that time all these creatures will return. The time will be called The Return of the Buffalo. One by one, as the years pass, the creatures that once lived here like the hawk, the osprey and the eagle will again fly in these skies. The cats, the bear and the buffalo will again walk these lands. These returning creatures w...ill be our ancestors who will return as spirit animals. They will come back to usher in this new time, a time when the Pale One will return and again walk among us. When this time comes, it will be a new beginning for the Indians. You and your children will return to being the keeper of Mother Earth because this thing called progress has hurt Mother Earth. We will have returned to us what has taken from us. The Creator will open doors for the Indian so that the Indian can be prosperous in businesses and our people will not be without. You will see the numbers of the Indians multiply like grass growing across the country. This will be a time when our numbers will be great and like the grass and you will see many colors in the grass, but the grass will still be grass. There will be struggles between a lot of our people over this and that is sad. But because of greed this will happen. But the future will come and those united will be the future and the future of our culture and survival will be in their hands. Watch for your ancestors as they return, they will guide you to this new century. In the east you will see a rainbow, walk towards the rainbow and when you are finished walking, in the light of the rainbow, you will see the buffalo. Today, is that time, the year 2000 was the turn of the century, this is the new century, we are the seventh generation, and your ancestors are returning. The numbers of our people have increased in the 2000 Census. And like the different colored grasses, those are the people of mixed blood who are returning to their roots and claiming their heritage, increasing the census. This is the time we have waited for, now is the century to join together as one and follow the path to a better life for all of us. This is the time of The Return of the Buffalo.
