HEADQUARTERS 1st INFANTRY DIVISION APO San Francisco 96345 21 October 1967 AWARD OF THE SOLDIERS MEDAL TAPIA, JOSE PRIVATE FIRST CLASS E3 United States Army Company D 1st Battalion 26th Infantry Awarded: Soldiers Medal Date of action~19 August 1967 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Reason: For heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy: On this date , Private First Class Tapia was serving with His unit on a. search and destroy mission near the village of Phuoc Vinh. While moving along the Song Be River one of the men in Private First Class Tapia’s platoon slipped and fell into the water The soldier was immediately caught by the swift current and swept out into the deep water. Unhesitatingly Private First Class Tapia removed his combat equipment and dived into the treacherous muddy water. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he swam to the aid of the drowning individual. The swift current pulled him. under the water several times. With great physical effort and determination, Private First Class Tapia brought his comrade to the surface and succeeded, in pulling him back to shore, His decisive actions in the face of danger were directly responsible for saving the soldiers life. Private First Class Tapia’s action are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
