A letter by a UCU Student: What is wrong with some members of staff at this university? Where do people get the guts to misuse offices like they are their personal homes? I happened to go to ask for my financial statement at the accounts office; but on reaching there, I left frustrated because of the way I was treated. The first person I met at the reception gave me the I-don’t-care attitude. I didn’t mind that much until I opened my mouth to speak. When I asked how I could access my financial statement, I was hesitantly told the person in charge was away for lunch. It was 2:30pm. I was told to go back after an hour, which I did as I had been told. They told me he had not returned yet. For three consecutive days, I got different excuses until I gave up. Although this attitude of poor customer care is dominant in the accounts office, other offices like UIS, Allan Galpin Health Centre, Library, Dining Hall, among others cannot be left out. There are offices you go to and the administrative assistants never welcome you. When you ask to see the boss, they always give excuses of their bosses being busy, in meetings or not in office. Some keep busy on their computers or even their phones gossiping during working hours. Our staff members need to adjust. I request that the Human Resource Directorate intervenes. Otherwise, the cancer is eating up UCU slowly. We deserve better as students, staff and visitors as well. Name withheld on request
