Why Martha Shugart should be your State Representative: You have the opportunity to elect the woman who wakes me up each day well before my alarm goes off as your State Representative, if you’re lucky enough to live in her district. Every day when I’m woken up at 6 am, I’d love nothing more than to be angry, but I know something about my mom. She expects greatness, and each day this greatness, for some reason, peaks just before sunrise. She doesn’t ask for much, but she does expect a few things from her children. She expects us to work hard and to be smart, she expects us to be honest, she expects us to live each day in a productive manner, and she expects us to listen to, respect, and help others in any way we can. Simply put, she expects from her children exactly what she practices herself, and nothing less. There’s never been a moment in my life where my mom hasn’t been working hard at something, whether it was nursing, serving as deputy coroner, or serving as Alderman, she always has and continues to go to work each day to improve the lives of others, and comes home each night to spend time with her family. She never seems to run out of energy, but she never complains about it either, and when confronted with negativity, she rarely reacts (I’m still waiting to inherit this trait.) I have watched her struggle, fight for her life, and work hard to the point where anyone else would be exhausted to serve her family and her community. If I were to grow up to possess half of her qualities, I’d be more than proud of the person I am. In my eyes and in the eyes of countless others, my mom is a woman who has dedicated her entire life to helping others, and I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t want a person with these qualities to represent their own families.
