(A letter to graduates. I wish someone told me this when I graduated) Dear Graduate, I meet scores of people your age every week during my talks in different institutions. A lot of them have been fed with thoughts such as ‘The only reason to work is to earn money,’ ‘Pursue a career in which rationality takes precedence over love.’ And shockingly, most of them have come to accept that is how careers are supposed to be. Since when have you become rational? From your favourite restaurant to falling in love and everything in between, you make irrational decisions. When it comes career choices alone, why do you want to be rational? I understand you have been brought up in a system, where there is overwhelming focus on pursuing a career without risks. There is too much pressure on you to adhere to norms. There is great acceptance in the society for adhering to norms and condescending disapproval on unique pursuits. There is always enough money to splurge on marriages and not enough money to invest in research. It is normal to loan money to buy a house (and become slaves to paying EMI) but it is a huge risk to loan money to start a business. I understand you have been weighed down by all these. #Careers #LinkedIn #Trending https://linkedin/pulse/article/20140924161716-34459741-don-t-be-rational
