Thanks. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* In Memoriam The Department of Defense announced the deaths of 21 U.S. military service members in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from Aug. 11 – Sept. 22. Eighteen were Soldiers, two were Sailors and one was an Airman. They ranged in age from 20 to 44 and were from the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Virginia, as well as the territory of American Samoa. To date, a total of 2,277 Americans have lost their lives as part of the war in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Octavio Herrera, 26, of Caldwell, Idaho; Sgt. Jamar A. Hicks, 22, of Little Rock, Ark.; and Spc. Keith E. Grace Jr., 26, of Baytown, Texas died Aug. 11 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with indirect fire. The three were assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky. Herrera and Grace died in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, while Hicks was evacuated to Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost, Afghanistan, where he later died. 1st Lt. Timothy G. Santos Jr., 29, of Helena, Ala., died Aug. 18 in Fort Bliss, Texas, from a non-combat related illness diagnosed on March 24 in Kuwait City, Kuwait. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. Master Sgt. George A. Bannar Jr., 37, of Orange, Va., died Aug. 20 of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, N.C. Spc. Kenneth Clifford Alvarez, 23, of Santa Maria, Calif., and Pvt. Jonathon Michael Dean Hostetter, 20, of Humphreys, Mo., died Aug. 23 in Haft Asiab, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device during combat operations. Both were assigned to 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. 1st Lt. Jason Togi, 24, of Pago Pago, American Samoa, died Aug. 26 in Hasan Karez, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Sgt. 1st Class Ricardo D. Young, 34, of Rosston, Ark., died Aug. 28 in Farah Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 307th Engineer Battalion (Combat/Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C. Staff Sgt. Michael H. Ollis, 24, of Staten Island, N.Y., died Aug. 28 in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, small arms and indirect fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, N.Y. Staff Sgt. Joshua J. Bowden, 28, of Villa Rica, Ga., died Aug. 31 in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire while on dismounted patrol. He was assigned to the 242nd Ordnance Battalion (EOD), 71st Ordnance Group (EOD), Fort Carson, Colo. USAF Staff Sgt. Todd J. Lobraico Jr., 22, of New Fairfield, Conn., died Sept. 5 from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire near Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 105th Security Forces Squadron at Stewart Air National Guard Base, N.Y. Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr., 24, of Fontana, Calif., died Sept. 13 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, of wounds suffered during a non-combat related incident on April 21 in Maiwand, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Fort Bliss, Texas. Staff Sgt. Randall R. Lane, 43, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Sept. 13 in Kabul, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related illness. He was assigned to the 190th Transportation Battalion, 38th Sustainment Brigade, Franklin, Ind. Sgt. William D. Brown III, 44, of Franklin, N.C., died Sept. 19 in Laghman Province, Afghanistan, from a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Polk, La. Spc. James T. Wickliffchacin, 22, of Edmond, Okla., died Sept. 20 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol during combat operations in Pul-E-Alam, Afghanistan on Aug. 12. He was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Stewart, Ga. Staff Sgt. Liam J. Nevins, 32, of Denver, Colo.; Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill, 30, of Ramsey, N.J.; and Spc. Joshua J. Strickland, 23, of Woodstock, Ga., died Sept. 21 at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with small arms fire while conducting range training in Gardez, Paktia Province, Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Nevins was assigned to 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Watkins, Colo. Staff Sgt. McGill, was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Middletown, R.I. Spc. Strickland was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. Lt. Cmdr. Landon L. Jones, 35, of Lompoc, Calif., and Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan S. Gibson, 32, of Aurora, Ore., died Sept. 22 as a result of an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter crash while operating in the central Red Sea. Both were assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Six at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, Calif.
