A little departure from the ordinary here... In the video (and do not get me wrong here, James Morrison can unquestionably play - these are tim trying to wrap his head around it musings) he talks about the only difference between playing high and low being the speed of the air, that the lips remain constant (I am thinking he meant the aperture). He goes on to explain how if you blow too much air, the lips blow apart, because you cant hold them in place - that I get and teach. Then he goes on to explain that the lips have to become firmer (I believe is the term used) to resist the faster air, and lastly that faster air is not more air (I believe) - you use MORE air to play louder and the aperture adjusts only for volume and not range. First, faster air, through the same opening would necessarily have to be more air? Second, if you firm the embouchure that will make the lips more resistant to vibration affecting the vibrating surface (ergo, a secondary method to up the range)? I did really enjoy the bit about pulling the trumpet away and the sound starting back - I have to try that. Any thoughts my fellow teacher/players out there? https://youtube/watch?v=Y6WoD7WQ55I
