A little history on the City Fire Department and its coverage of - TopicsExpress

A little history on the City Fire Department and its coverage of parts of the county. I hope this helps clear up any confusion. When we used the old station on N. Lee St we covered anyone who lived in the county and wanted protection from us on a fee basis. This was allowed by the Insurance Service Office (ISO). We were only allowed to respond to those registered for coverage and that could only be up to 5 road miles from the station. Upon moving to the present station on S. Lee St. this practice was continued. When the station opened on the Southerfield Road this station could respond into the county to registered property but the distance still had to be measured from the downtown station. After Station 3 was built on Hwy 49 North the citizens of the 27 District voted for fire protection and the city and county entered into an agreement for the city department to cover this area. There were some people who used to be registered but could no longer get coverage because they were now out of the 27th District. Like whys there were those previously out of the 5 mile distance from the downtown station that were now covered because they were in the 27th District. None of the stations were ever built to primarily cover the county with fire protection. The station on the Southerfield Road was built to primarily cover the North part of the city including the County Schools and the Industrial Park which helped bring in new industry because of the lower ISO rating of the city. Station 3 on Hwy 49 was built to cover the North Eastern and Eastern parts of the city. It is my understanding that another station is needed for the Northwestern part around Armory Drive. Some of the lines for the 27th District was the South Georgia Parkway, the District Line Road to the East, past Kowania (sp) out 49 South, Tallent Store Road to the west, and Mask Road to the Southeast. Anyone with the time can check their own mileage from the downtown station and see the difference in coverage from the registration coverage we used to the agreement between governments we went to. I hope this helps everybody understand the coverage the city has provided the county over the years with the approval of the ISO. PS I can also tell you from personal experience the hardest thing a firefighter can tell someone is they can not respond to their burning house because it is not registered or not in your coverage area.
