A little morning music for Gaudete Sunday. The setting is that of the exile in Babylon (that really happened - see the Babylonian chronicles) and the promise of return and prosperity. The mountains are a place from which wide areas could hear the news, and Judah, the southern kingdom, is mentioned because the northern kingdom, known as Israel, ceased to exist due to Assyrian conquest more than a hundred years prior. Were probably in about 580 BC or so. Handels Messiah is in three parts: 1: The promised coming (including this piece) and the ministry of Christ, 2: the passion of Christ, resurrection, preaching of the Gospel, rejection of the Gospel, and Gods great victory (Hallelujah Chorus), and 3. Eternal life and The day of judgement, victory over sin and death, and a final acclamation. The Hallelujah chorus is actually meant for Pascha (Easter), but its fun any time of the year. Gotta love that thumbnail. She looks a bit like the scary mask in scary movie.
